Lysander first heard this song from members of the Shota Ensemble in Kosovo. It describes a nineteenth-century battle for Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire. The title refers to the city of Ioannina/Janina in modern-day Greece, which remains an important cultural center. This style of singing, called iso-polyphony, is unique to the region.
