about

Dragana i Slaveya (Bulgaria, arr. Philip Kutev, 20th century)
A song about a young girl and a nightingale. The bird challenges her to a singing contest: if he wins, he will cut off her hair, but if she wins, she can cut off his wings. Dragana wins, and he begs for mercy; how will he feed his chicks if he can’t fly? Dragana agrees to let him off the hook, saying it is enough of an honor to out-sing the nightingale. Philip Kutev wrote this and many other iconic choral arrangements for his State Ensemble for Folk Song and Dance, founded in 1951. This professional, state-sponsored women’s choir drew expert singers from villages all over Bulgaria, and brought Bulgarian folk music to international audiences.

lyrics

Dragana sat in her garden under a rose bush, embroidering and singing. A nightingale perched above her and said,‘Keep singing, Dragana. If you can outsing me, cut off my wings. If I win, I’ll cut off your hair.’ But Dragana sang even more beautifully than the nightingale. The bird pleaded, ‘I have young chicks in my nest. Don’t chop off my wings, chop off my legs instead.’ Dragana replied, ‘Nightingale, I don’t need to chop off anything. It is prize enough to have outsung you.’
